In large Kubernetes clusters, network traffic quickly becomes complex, yet for most teams, the network flows remain completely hidden. Because modern cloud bandwidth is vast, this invisible traffic is rarely scrutinized. But unchecked traffic can lead to high cloud bills and often serves as a silent indicator of underlying inefficiencies.
In this presentation, we demonstrate how leveraging OpenTelemetry eBPF instrumentation (OBI) helped us uncover and mitigate massive traffic flows – particularly expensive cross-zone traffic – in a production environment. We share our findings and concrete examples of how we were able to drastically reduce this traffic.
Helpful is fundamental knowledge in Metrics and Kubernetes. No previous eBPF knowledge is needed, no advanced networking expertise is required.
Attendees will learn how any cluster administrator can harness eBPF-based observability to illuminate hidden network flow issues, correct configuration mistakes, and optimize their infrastructure. Practical examples include applying data compression, implementing smarter metric scraping, and optimizing Istio control plane traffic.
