As Kubernetes adoption grows, many organizations move from managing a few clusters to dozens or even hundreds. At this scale, clusters stop being a convenient abstraction and become an operational bottleneck, especially with increasing isolation and scheduling demands thanks to AI and GPU requirements.
In this talk, we share lessons from real-world platform engineering: when the traditionell model breaks down, which alternatives actually work, and where they fail. We compare approaches like virtual clusters and hosted control planes based on real trade-offs in isolation, scalability, and day-two operations.
Eventually, you’ll learn how to choose the right model for your platform.
- A basic understanding of Kubernetes (pods, nodes, control plane, etc.)
- Initial experience in operating or using Kubernetes clusters; ideally, some familiarity with GPUs in this context
- Familiarity with platform or DevOps concepts is helpful but not essential.
- Understand when the “cluster-only” model no longer scales
- Evaluate the trade-offs of different multi-tenancy approaches (e.g. virtual clusters vs. hosted control planes)
- Understand the differences between the approaches in practice (isolation, scalability, operational overhead)
- Make informed decisions regarding your own platform architecture
